One of the first things couples tell me is, “We’re not very good in front of the camera.” The truth is, almost everyone feels that way. Unless you’re used to being photographed professionally, it’s completely natural to feel a little self-conscious at first.
The good news is that you don’t need to know how to pose or perform to have beautiful wedding photographs. In fact, some of the most meaningful images are captured when you’re simply being yourselves.
Documentary wedding photography isn’t about asking you to smile on command or recreate moments for the camera. It’s about allowing your day to unfold naturally while I quietly document everything as it happens. The laughter with your bridal party while getting ready, your partner’s reaction as they see you for the first time, the hugs from family and the quiet moments you steal together throughout the day all tell a much richer story than any posed photograph ever could.
When it comes to couple portraits, I keep things relaxed and uncomplicated. Rather than directing every movement, I’ll suggest a walk, ask you to hold hands or simply encourage you to spend a few minutes together away from everyone else. Before long, you’ll forget the camera is even there.
The best photographs happen when you’re focused on each other rather than on me. Talk, laugh, take in the scenery, or simply enjoy a quiet moment together. Those genuine interactions create expressions and emotions that simply can’t be staged.
It’s also worth remembering that your wedding day isn’t a photoshoot. The photographs are there to preserve your memories, not interrupt them. My aim is always to blend into the background as much as possible, allowing you to fully experience your day while quietly documenting every meaningful moment.
By the end of the day, most couples tell me they barely noticed the camera. That’s exactly how it should be. When you’re comfortable, relaxed and completely present, your photographs become a true reflection of who you are and how your wedding day actually felt.
